The series will introduce participants to a number of Yiddish dance concepts, stylings, and vocabulary and have you moving in no time! No dance experience required. YIDDISH DANCE 101 • March 8 • This introduction class features lessons on how to dance to klezmer music, focusing on basic styling of the improvisational Freylekhs and Khosidl, and other essential repertoire, including the Bulgar and Zhok. RSVP to Yiddish Dance 101 HERE!
GO FIGURE • April 19 • This session will explore the rich tradition of Jewish figure dances (dances in formations, like square dances). Learn the essential wedding square dance, the Sher, which had its own unique Philadelphia version! Other dances like the Patsh Tants (clapping dance) and other old and new dances will be reviewed. THE YIDDISH BALLROOM • May 17 • In the third part of this series, participants will discover how popular European ballroom dances made their way into the klezmer repertoire.
